When bathing one pours and splashes water over oneself from the main tank using the gayung. The tanks are shown nearly empty to reveal the passive crossflow pipe between them. The squat toilet has a water seal like most modern ceramic toilets; you clean up and flush with water scooped from the small tank with the gayung.
