Although also from Timor, this example from Bélu, located near the border of East Timor, stands quite apart from the Keva fabrics displayed in the Timor section-- indeed, the fabrics of Bélu are so different, the Timorese themselves often have difficulty identifying the cloth.
The black base with colorful decorative embroidery delivers striking high contrast while maintaining a sense of cool dignity. Often one will see nearly all-black sarungs, with colorful bands (such as the one depicted here) only at either end.
This piece is a small slendang, of unusual detail. It may be used as a sash, belt, head wrap, or keyboard dust cover.
